Mild signals beat loud dashboards in early prototypes
Clients sometimes ask for a polished analytics mock that resembles a finished reporting suite. For design and prototype work on app interaction analytics, that request usually arrives too soon.
Our prototypes emphasize mild, readable signals: a labeled tap on a checkout step, a property that distinguishes first-time from returning visitors, a note describing what ‘success’ means for that path. Those artifacts survive scrutiny in a critique session. Chart chrome does not.
When a prototype critique focuses on whether a researcher could explain the event to a new teammate in one sentence, the design stays honest. If the sentence collapses into jargon about funnels and retention curves without naming the interaction, we revise.
Save the loud visual treatments for later product work. The studio’s job is to make interaction meaning testable before anyone commits a tracking plan to production.
